February 27, 2005 - New York City - "The Gates"

05:00 - Arrive in NYC. I have 3.5 hours to shoot to catch a 9am bus back to Boston. It is a quick turnaround, but I am determined to be in Central Park West before dawn... if only I can find the right train!

Lost on the A train - again!

05:30 - After walking up and down endless staircases and long tunnels, I board the train at 42nd street. As I try to use a map on the train, a kind stranger at West 4th tells me I am heading to Brooklyn not Central Park West

Up and down more stairs to the right platform. The train is delayed so I turn the camera on myself to check out my new do done by super stylist Ayesha at Roxbury's "A Twist of Passion"!

A Life of Quiet Activism

by: Horace Randall Williams

Johnnie Carr, along with Rosa Parks, Fred Gray and E.D. Nixon was a Montgomery native who helped inaugurate the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Carr was a childhood friend of Rosa Parks who helped her out of jail on December 1, 1955the night Parks was arrested for defying the segregation laws of the Montgomery bus system. Carr helped organize Parks’s defense and the subsequent Montgomery Bus Boycott. She was one of the first members of the NAACP’s Montgomery chapter, and followed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as president of the Montgomery Improvement Association. After the boycott, Carr and attorney Fred Gray continued the struggle to desegregate the Montgomery City Schools, which remained separate despite the Supreme Court’s 1954 ruling that segregation violated the rights of African Americans. Carr chose her son, Arlam Carr, Jr. as the plaintiff in Gray’s successful lawsuit against the Montgomery Public School system. With both the segregation of the bus system and the segregation of the schools declared unconstitutional, Carr and Gray achieved victories for the cause of civil rights all over the country, through local struggles in their own hometown. Carr’s life of tireless and quiet dedication to her convictions and her community is an example to those who seek a life devoted to social justice and principled leadership.

With flag held high fans sang God Bless America while staging a mini parade on Landsdowne Street. When I heard a surprised voice shout, "Look! It's somebody's Mom," I snapped out of photojournalist mode, noted the chaotic, testosterone charged scene, lack of crowd control & general hooliganism and decided to make my way back home.

(from the website) Black Fives, Inc. is a small, independently owned, and independently financed company that is dedicated to researching, preserving, and promoting the history of early all-black basketball teams that played in the antique, segregated era of sports from the 1910s through the late-1940s, when the National Basketball League (NBL) and later the National Basketball Association (NBA) finally became integrated. These teams played during a time when sports and life in America were harshly segregated, a period we call the Black Fives Era.
